Egyptian tortoises have been kept at home for quite some time. My favorite thing about them is that they are gentle and not aggressive. Unfortunately, they are easily stressed and require special care. They also dehydrate quickly, so they need to be bathed regularly. However, they have a very long lifespan and can thrive in captivity.
